There is no cure for stupidity

No Right Turn posted the following:

The sickness spreads

While the world is focussed on bird flu, there's another disease spreading: the disease of Abu Ghraib. And it has now spread to America itself:

More than 100 inmates at a Los Angeles County jail were ordered to strip naked, had their mattresses taken away and were left with only blankets to cover themselves for a day as Los Angeles Sheriff's Department officials tried to quell racially charged violence that has plagued the jail system for nearly two weeks.

Stripping prisoners for the purposes of punishment and control may be effective, but it is also humiliating, dehumanising and degrading. But what seperates civilisation from barbarism is a refusal to do what is merely "effective" in favour of doing what is right or decent or humane. That's why civilised societies don't imprison without trial, impose draconian punishments, or torture or kill people. Unfortunately, by those standards, the US is already no longer civilised.

Fortunately, for people like you, there are people like me. I'm retired military - underwater warrior/spook. We ensure that you guys retain the freedom to be as stupid as you wish.

Your compassion (with which I have no quarrel, in principle) is blinding you to life's realities. I live in Los Angeles. I can tell you unequivocally that any one of the rioting prisoners would as soon kill you for your jacket, shirt, wallet, car (you choose), as look at you. These guys are where they are precisely because of their abandonment of civilized processes.

I suggest the following way to handle these animals: Upon conviction, lock them into isolated cells, and keep them there until their prison term expires. No contact with anyone; no visits - not even attorneys; no books; no TV; no phone calls; no mail; no music; no body-building exercise, in fact no exercise of any kind, except for isometric in-cell exercises. Bottom line is, you sit in your cell for your entire sentence - no exceptions.

Under this plan no prisoner gets raped, hurt, killed. There are no prison gangs, no race riots.

And guys like you can continue with your nonsense ranting against the very thing that keeps you free.

umm.. It seems that your thirst for vengence/punishment has blinded you to life's realities.
The biggest one of all being, what state are these people in when they are released after serving their sentence in your preffered fashion?
The smart money is on them being even more screwed up, angry, unable to re-intergrate into society and pretty much looking for someone/thing to vent their hostility on. That is if they have managed to not be reduced to mental jelly.
Which leads to, guess what, more violent crime and more cost to the taxpayer.
And as for no access to attorneys, geez dude, why dont you just ship out to gitmo right now.
Im not saying we should be all whishy washy and soft on violent offenders, and yes there are offenders out there who are unrepentant and seemingly beyond help, but if you treat a person like an animal, all you will get is an animal.
Do you want to increase the number of animalistic offenders?
We all have an obligation to society to keep each other safe. but its a double edged sword it comprises both punishment and rehabilitation.

I don't have a "thirst for vengence [sic]/punishment." I don't want to spend another dime on these creeps. I don't care about integrating them back into society; I don't care about their "mental health" or their physical comfort. I don't care about their "rights," except to work within the constitutional constraints of not using cruel and unusual punishment (torture). If they come out of prison with a grudge, and if they use that grudge as an excuse to commit another crime, put them back.

The initial cost may be somewhat higher, but ultimately, we will save millions. For example, in my system you don't need hundreds of prison guards in each prison. All you need is a way to get food to the prisoners. You don't have to clean up their cells. If they choose to mess them up (throw feces around or whatever) - then they get to live in that filth until we let them out. All you need is sufficient guards to control one prisoner at a time during initial input, and final release. Even this can be done "remotely." The prisoner can be ordered to walk a certain path, enter a specific cell, take specific actions - and if the prisoner refuses, shoot him on the spot from a safe location.

Sure it's harsh, but the reason a person is in prison is because he has been convicted of violating society's rules, and has forfeited any right to society's benefits and protections until the sentence is completed.

What about the nonviolent prisoner - the "white collar" crime guy? Two possibilities: (1) treat them like everyone else; (2) create a two-tier system, where violent offenders get what I have been talking about, and the others have something like what we now have. If a prisoner in the "soft" system breaks any rule at all - and I mean literally anything - they go to the system I have been describing for the sentence balance.

What I have presented here is just an outline. I am certain that the details would change as we discuss the various implications of my proposal, but the bottom line would remain: We maintain absolute control over the prisoners 100% of the time.

They did it for a whole day! Oh, the inhumanity! This will not serve up well with the "it's not their fault, it's society's fault and we owe them something" crowd.
